DPIIT recognition is the single most valuable thing an early-stage Indian startup can get. It unlocks a 3-year income tax holiday, angel tax immunity and 80% patent fee reduction — all free to apply.
What is DPIIT recognition?
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) recognises eligible startups through the Startup India program. Recognition is granted via the Startup India portal and gives access to a range of tax and regulatory benefits.
Eligibility criteria
- Incorporated as Pvt Ltd, OPC, LLP, or registered partnership
- Age of company: not more than 10 years from incorporation date
- Annual turnover: not more than ₹100 crore in any previous year
- Working towards innovation, development, or improvement of products/services/processes
- Scalable business model with high potential for job creation or wealth creation
- Not formed by splitting up or reconstruction of an existing business
💡 Note: You do not need to be a "tech startup" to qualify. Restaurants, manufacturers, service firms and traditional businesses can also get DPIIT recognition if they demonstrate innovation.

Step-by-step application process
- Go to startupindia.gov.in → Register / Login
- Click "Apply for DPIIT Recognition"
- Fill in company details: incorporation date, CIN, type of entity, PAN
- Describe your innovation in 500 words or less (this is the most important section)
- Upload incorporation certificate, PAN, and other supporting documents
- Submit — recognition is typically granted within 2 business days (auto-approved for most)
How to write the innovation section (and get approved)
The single reason applications get rejected is a weak innovation description. Here's what the DPIIT looks for:
- Problem being solved: Describe the specific pain point your startup addresses
- How your solution is innovative: What's different from existing solutions in the market
- Scalability: How will this scale to create employment or wealth
- Technology or process innovation: Even a novel business model qualifies
